is a beautiful neo-classical house designed by Sir Charles Lanyon, surrounded by a walled parkland estate of a thousand acres and seventy acres of gardens, with many miles of walks and avenues, a conifer arboretum and Ireland’s largest privately owned walled garden.
The estate has been home to eleven generations of the McCausland family who built Drenagh to replace their earlier house, Fruithill, in 1836. The result is a perfect cut-stone house in the Regency style, with a formal drawing room, two dining rooms, a morning room, a library and a billiard room.
Drenagh is only available for groups. The house is fully staffed and the menus are discussed and agreed with the chef in advance, using organic produce from the farm and the locality wherever possible. The four guest bedrooms all have four poster beds and wonderful views over the garden and park.
Guests are welcome to wander through the estate enjoying the views of the Donegal hills and the Sperrin Mountains. They can stroll along the Curly River as it meanders its way through organic farmland, wander along winding woodland paths or simply relax in the Moon Garden, the English Garden, the Italian Garden or the Rhododendron Glen.
There is pheasant and partridge shooting on the estate, along with fishing, archery, Clay Pigeon shooting, horses for riding, bicycle routes and long walks. The house even has its own private cricket pitch in front of the North façade.
The Walled City of Derry is 18 miles to the west while the Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills Distillery are also close by, making Drenagh an ideal location for exploring the northwest.
There are six blue flag beaches and nine golf courses, including the championship course at Royal Portrush, within easy driving distance. The City of Derry Airport is only eight miles off and the Belfast Airports about an hour away, while helicopter transfers and tours can easily be arranged.
Despite its proximity to the prosperous market town of Limavady, Drenagh maintains a feeling of absolute privacy and security. The present owners, Conolly and Sheelagh McCausland, have been tireless in restoring the gardens, which fell into neglect after the War Office requisitioned the estate in 1940. They make every effort to meet the individual needs of their guests, thus ensuring that your stay at Drenagh will always be a memorable one.
